Stop talking about Josh Donaldson

Alright dip-shits, I'm back. All of your stupidity on Twitter and that of the manager putting Matt Carpenter at second base has driven me to not only be more active on social media, but has actually given me the will power to toss some words together that are sure to infuriate you.

Lets jump right to the title of this poorly written article. Why in the hell are we talking about acquiring Josh Donaldson?

He is 31 years old, has missed most of the season due to injury and is a free agent after 2018.

If we can all agree that this is not a roster that can compete, and likely still would be challenged versus the likes of the division leading Brewers and the bound to eventually catch fire Cubs, why in the flying eff would you make this investment?

Would you really sign Josh Donaldson to a long term deal at the age of 33 after the 2018 season?

I sure as hell would not be interested in trading away what looks like a bounty if you believe Jon Heyman has an IQ above that of Forrest Gump.

Now, for the real part of this article....

Why aren't we talking about trading for Manny Machado?

Are the Orioles not just one game above the Blue Jays in the AL East standings?

Don't the Orioles have just as many obstacles in their path to a Wild Card birth?

Isn't Manny Machado a free agent after the 2018 season as well? Wouldn't the Orioles be interested in maximizing his trade value now as opposed to waiting and making him a rental in one year if they are out of it again?

Don't the Cardinals need a shortstop?

Yup, I bolded (is that a word), italicized and underlined that last rhetorical question so you would not miss it.

The most glaring holes on the roster and in the entire organization currently on July 6, 2017 are:

1. A defensively capable shortstop

2. Somebody to fit the three-hole (Mozeliak admitted it on the radio just hours ago)

Machado fits both needs.

Would I be willing to give up the ransom Heyman suggests for Donaldson? Hell no.

Would I give it up for Machado?

Abso-effing-lutely.

Now you are going to tell me, "Hey dumbass, Machado is a third baseman, not a shortstop. You are an idiot. Drink bleach in your mom's basement."

Except, Machado is a shortstop. The Orioles just have been misusing him.

In 207 career minor league games, Machado played just four of them at third base. Can you guess what position Machado played in the other 203 games?

Machado was moved to third base out of necessity when he was called up. It was suppose to be temporary and to help avoid the disabled list, which was a problem when he was a rookie when suffered a bad knee injury. Then the stupid Orioles gave JJ Hardy an extension and just left Machado at third base to wilt.

Machado got a cameo at shortstop in 2016 when Hardy went down to injury. In 45 games, he was worth three defensive runs saved.

Is that good? I don't know, check out the leaders at shortstop in the entire league so far in 2017 (these guys have played twice as many games at the position than Manny did in 2016). (Note: Fangraphs recommends three years of data as a sample for defensive runs saved. But that ruins my narrative, so I am ignoring it.)

Lets stop blabbing and tweeting and masturbating about Josh Donaldson. If you are to day dream about a deal that will never happen, at least do so in the smartest way possible. Donaldson is not the perfect fit. The Cardinals already have the sixth best third baseman according to fWAR.

But at shortstop, the Cardinals rank 19th (Diaz 0.3 fWAR, DeJong 0.2 fWAR). That is where they need the most improvement.

The Cardinals need a star long-term. You know it. I know it. Mozeliak knows it.

Yeah they would have to buck up and pay Machado likely the largest contract ever recorded. But I rather give him that money than anything representing the nine-figures to Donaldson that he will command long-term.

I'd also be willing to part with prospects like Alex Reyes, Delvin Perez and Magneuris Sierra for Machado and the chance to have him for a decade. I do not feel the same about Donaldson.

There, I wrote an article that 14 humans and 282 robots will read over the coming days. All of them will disagree with me, especially the robots.

Thanks for reading. See you again in three months.
