Cardinals fans finally shower Matt Holliday with praise he deserves

Image
Matt Holliday and the St. Louis Cardinals are finally going to break up, as it was announced on Friday afternoon that general manager John Mozeliak and communicated with the slugger the club’s intention NOT to pick-up his option for next season. The move came as little surprise, but surprisingly sent Twitter in to an uproar on how cheap the franchise is and how Holliday deserved better.  Of course, there also were the other detractors who go out of their way to diminish Holliday’s accomplishments as a member of the Cardinals organization that were in essence saying “good riddance.”  But the reality, or should I say irony, of Friday’s proceedings at Busch, including Holliday’s magical pinch-hit home run in what was likely his last at bat as a member of the Cardinals, was that Holliday finally garnered the respect from Cardinals fans that he has long deserved. It took a home run in his last at bat with the franchise for Cardinals fans to stop taking Holliday for grant...

Cardinals trade deadline focus should solely be on CF

The St. Louis Cardinals find themselves in a precarious spot for the first time in many years. It has been over half a decade where you would consider the Cardinals and general manager John Mozeliak anything other than a “buyer” at the MLB trade deadline. But the 2016 season has presented some unique circumstances and despite struggles at home,  an onslaught of injuries and inconsistencies, the club sits just 6.5 games out of first place in the NL Central and in one of the two Wild Card spots. In most towns, given the circumstances, this would be considered a job well done by Mozeliak, manager  Mike Matheny  and the Cardinals. But when it comes to baseball, St. Louis fans do not view themselves as “most towns.” More is expected of this organization despite an unprecedented run of success, including 12 of 16 playoff appearances and four World Series appearances, including two titles. Cardinals fans are expecting Mozeliak to make a move, and the popular notion wo...

Positions where Cardinals are "below average" may surprise you

Image
It was another miserable weekend for the St. Louis Cardinals, who dropped 2 of 3 games from the Miami Marlins in the club’s first series after the All-star game. The weekend saw many of the same issues that have plagued the Cardinals all season, which caused the unfavorable, yet all too familiar result. An ineffective Trevor Rosenthal, too many strikeouts, bad defense, below average starting pitching and yes, some questionable decisions from manager Mike Matheny were the culprits once again. As I watched, bewildered by what I saw once more, I decided to venture over to baseball-reference.com just to thumb over some stats and see if there were any other issues besides Michael Wacha’s inability to go deep in to games consistently and Aledmys Diaz’s below-average defense at the shortstop position. And boy did I find something interesting. I realize many of you stat geeks rely on Fangraphs for your WAR figures, but I was on baseball-reference, so we will use their numbers. ...

Tip your cap to John Mozeliak for Aledmys Diaz

Image
Before you dig into this minor miracle that is the second piece of content published by our mostly irrelevant site this week, I want to proclaim a warning. If you are one of those St. Louis Cardinals fans that blame every failed pinch-hitting appearance or every inherited runner to score on manager  Mike Matheny  or general manager John Mozeliak, then should just stop reading now. This is a land of reality. A land where emotion is balanced out with common sense. A space where we try to prove that your initial reaction, at no fault of your own, is basically wrong. Now that we have that cleared up, I believe that Cardinals fans should tip their cap to Mozeliak for his bold risk in signing and sticking by  Aledmys Diaz . Yes, I am giving the general manager credit where credit is due. Diaz was basically an unknown when the Cardinals signed him to a four-year, $8 million deal and at the start of his career. He looked rusty, out-of-shape, and injury prone. He struggle...

Peyton Manning allegations are further proof of media in bed with NFL

Image
By now, you have heard that a media outlet called Al Jazeera (very credible, I might add) has a documentary called the  “The Dark Side: The Secret World of Sports Dopers”  set to air on their website later today. In that documentary, based on an undercover report by a British hurdler, several prominent American athletes are allegedly using sophisticated (and sometimes not so sophisticated) ways to use performance enhancing drugs. Several names have surfaced in the report, both from the NFL and MLB. But the most prominent name being Peyton Manning of the Denver Broncos, who  of course vehemently denied everything. I am not here to pick through the weeds on the details here or to slap Manning, or Ryan Howard, or anyone else named on the list on the wrist (although, the past has taught us regarding PED allegations, where there is smoke, there is fire). But what I am here to do is further explain my long-standing theory of how the NFL is a genius marketing machine and has ...

How John Mozeliak is like Warren Buffet

This post was originally posted on our old URL on December 25, 2015, but is meant to give you simply a snippet of what you should expect from us in the future on our new home, RooSportsMedia.com!  John Mozeliak is smarter than you.  He is smarter than me as well, so please do not feel as though I am only singling you out. But it must be said, that he is much smarter than you, despite the criticism he has faced this offseason for his failures in luring  Jason Heyward  and  David Price  to the St. Louis Cardinals. I mean, its not like he didn’t try. He did offer each a contract approaching $200 million, which are commitments his boss has never pledged to any single player before. Not even the great  Albert Pujols . Yet, the BFIB has constantly bitched and moaned about how poorly Mozliek performed this winter. Pardon me for repeating myself, but this is exactly why Mozeliak is smarter than you. When it comes to bidding on free agents, just because yo...
