St. Louis Cardinals fans have been lighting up social media with their wet dreams of acquiring Giancarlo Stanton. It is hard to blame them as it appears Stanton feels like the perfect fit and the club certainly has the prospect and financial resources to make a deal with the Marlins and bring the MVP to the Midwest. Many fans, the forever pessimists, are already calling for the heads of team executives if they can not make a deal, suggesting coming in second again would simply not be acceptable. If this were a normal situation, my feelings would be similar considering the franchise’s desperate need for an anchor and star. But this is not a normal situation. Saturday was admittedly another wild day, capping off an extended wild weekend in college football. Alabama, previously unblemished, lost to their bitter rival Auburn on the road and in doing so, has managed not even to earn the right to play for the SEC Championship. That privledge belongs to Auburn and Georgia, who will meet in Atlanta next week in Arthur Blank’s (ahem, pardon me, Atlanta’s) fancy new stadium in a rematch from earlier this season. That game was also the only blemish on Kirby Smart’s Georgia Bulldogs, which says something incredibly impressive regarding what Auburn has accomplished late in the season. But what has irked me is the pundits treatment of Alabama, who so many believe, still belongs in the College Football Playoff conversation. He is 31 years old, has missed most of the season due to injury and is a free agent after 2018. Anyone watching Fox Sports Midwest on Monday night had to wonder if they were watching a Junior Varsity contest between Chaminade Prep and DeSmet Jesuit. No, that certainly was a Major League game on Monday. A Major League game that the Cardinals managed (that is not a pun because this one has nothing to do with the manager) to lose despite the Washington Nationals committing four "official" errors. Despite the comedy of errors, the Cardinals fell to 2-5 on the young season, and I am sure that Twitter is on fire as I type this at 1045 pm CT. Yesterday, I told you that the biggest story you should be concerned with from the weekend should be Lance Lynn pitching just one inning in his start, leaving for "precautionary" reasons. The St. Louis Cardinals are finally in the final week of the long and dreaded spring training season. I personally feel worn out, and the ACTUAL season has yet to begin. Based on the stories of the weekend, the final week should be a busy and eventful one. Between Yadier Molina's ultimatum to have a contract in place by opening day or negotiations end and Kolten Wong being a nimrod and pretending like he is some savvy veteran who has actually earned something, the professional writers have had a pretty easy job over the last few days. Finally, we have clarity on the St. Louis Cardinals hacking scandal. Six months after Chris Correa (evidently, the lone bad wolf)  plead guilty in a federal court to hacking the Houston Astros database of prospect info, among other things, MLB has handed the Cardinals organization its punishment. The Cardinals have been fined $2 million (the max allowable under the new CBA) (a CBA that Cardinals owner Bill DeWitt was instrumental in negotiating). The club has also been stripped of their top two remaining MLB draft picks in 2017. Frankly, I think the Cardinals got off easy here. This is always an interesting time of year for baseball fans. It is an interesting purgatory between the “hot stove” session and when pitchers and catchers report to spring training. Random events happen, such as the Cubs visiting the White House and the Cardinals hosting an event where fans get to pay hundreds of dollars to have their foot signed by Yadier Molina. But the one thing that is worthy of the discussion this time of year is the revealing of Hall of Fame ballots. Generally, the individual ballots of voters are made public and ridicule and scorn soon follow. Generally, I keep pretty to myself on these things. Each “writer” is entitled to their own opinion. My favorite writer, Benjamin Hochman (laughter uncontrollably ensues) posted a predictable article  today on  STLToday.com , begging for support for public tax dollars at the state and local levels for a new MLS stadium in St. Louis. The funding of a new stadium, and the aid and profits it locks in for the potential owners of the new SC STL owners, are a hot topic debate currently as a deadline to get the possible funding on ballots in April looms closer. Of course this is a hot topic and very touchy right now in St. Louis. And it is of course for a simple reason. St. Louis Cardinals fans rejoiced last week when it was finally announced that general manager John Mozeliak was able to land his big fish,  Dexter Fowler . Mozeliak certainly pushed some of his own boundaries with this deal, extending Fowler to five-years at a price tag of $82.5 million to bring him to St. Louis. The move has received loads of praise from the talking heads in the market.  Benjamin Hochman likes the signing , of course, for reasons that have nothing to do with actual sports.  Derrick Goold has pointed out  that Fowler’s personality and leadership will add a new dynamic to the clubhouse. As St. Louis Cardinals fans sit around, frustrated with the lack of action taken by general manger John Mozeliak, there is plenty that can be learned from this “Hot Stove” season. As rumors continue to swirl around the St. Louis Cardinals and what they might still do to fill a gap in the outfield, improve the defense overall and “become more athletic,” I believe it is important to start looking ahead to some possible future issues.
